We owned the most stations and generated the most revenue."
Tapson retired at 45 in 1984 and spent his remaining years traveling with his wife, Gloria, and their daughter, Debbie (Pat) Ellisen, who survive him along with grandchildren Nathan and Rachel Ellisen.
Tapson was a Menlo-Atherton High School classmate of Dave Newhouse, who profiled his friend's dignified fight against a metastasizing cancer in his Oakland Tribune columns on Dec. 3 and Feb. 11.
There will be no funeral, but Tapson's family is planning a celebration of his life. The family requests no flowers but suggests donations in Tapson's name be sent to the American Cancer Society.

Newhouse: Fighting cancer bravely -- with dignity
By Dave Newhouse
Oakland Tribune columnist
Updated: 02/10/2010

The time has come for Dan Tapson, my old friend, to face up to the end of life. And he is doing so bravely, with unspoken courage, as terminal cancer creeps through his defenseless body.

So how does one say goodbye to a high-school buddy? By breaking with tradition and allowing the dying individual the opportunity to read his own obituary in his own words.
Saturday, I drove to Dan's Salinas home, where he sat in his bathrobe in the living room, hooked up to oxygen.
I've done thousands of interviews. This would be one of the hardest.

But when I asked Dan, 71, what he's proudest of in his life, he was ready.

"I'm not an egotistical person," he said. "The most proud thing is the legacy I've left with family and friends."

Dan grew tearful, then rested his voice.

"He's having difficulty breathing," said Gloria, his wife.

Married since 1965, they have one daughter and two grandchildren under 10. Both grandkids visited Dan for the last time a week ago. They call him "Tappy."

Dan and I grew close at Menlo-Atherton High School. After graduating, we saw little of each other until our class of 1956 held its 50th reunion, and I wrote a book about my classmates, including a chapter on Dan.

Then, two months ago, I wrote a column about Dan and how he was handling the early stages of cancer with dignity, possibly because he's experienced at overcoming the odds.

He was from a broken home, an unusual situation in the '50s. He graduated fifth in our high school class of 352 students. Stanford accepted him, but he couldn't afford the tuition. But a San Jose State education worked out fine for Dan, who found lots of pretty girls and parties on campus and still maintained top grades.

Remarkably, he retired from the work force at 45 after boosting ratings as sales manager at Oakland's KNEW radio station, then converting a ragtag San Jose hard rock music station, KOME, into a mega-success.

"I'm proud of the fact that I came into a marketplace like San Jose that didn't have a TV-radio industry, really, and was overshadowed by San Francisco for so long," he said. "We created our own marketplace, and I was the first president of the Northern California Broadcasters Association who wasn't from San Francisco.

"Last, but not least, Infinity Broadcasting became in 10 years the largest radio-only company in the United States. We owned the most stations and generated the most revenue."

Infinity, with KOME as its first entity, couldn't have risen to No. 1 without Dan's foresight, leadership, and street smarts — he was the salesman's salesman.

Only one thing matters to Dan right now: family.

"When you reach this point in life," Gloria noted, "the most important thing is love."

Debbie Tapson Ellisen feels her dad's love as he developed the patriarchal touch he missed in a fatherless home.

"He has real acceptance of people," Debbie said last week in Berkeley before meeting a software business associate. "He wanted me to be true to who I was, instead of trying to make me into what he wanted me to be.

"As a child, I always felt he heard me. He's a very good listener. He was like that with everyone — they could talk about themselves. He didn't dwell on the negatives; he always found silver linings. He wanted to have fun with people."

Debbie holds up her parents as having a model marriage.

"They love each other and are best friends," she said. "They are supportive, romantic and look at life as an adventure they would enjoy together."

Dan is a mix of coolness and swagger but conceals an inner toughness. Gloria said he's fighting cancer with considerable courage — one Advil per day.

Fatigue set in Saturday, as it does daily for Dan, and he needed a nap.

There was time for one more question.

Could Dan summarize his life?

He thought for 15 seconds before answering.

"Total fulfillment," he said.

Know any Good Neighbors? The above photo with his new bride Linda was taken in 2005 at O’D’s house in Pismo Beach.

Steve Hardy passed on the sad news to fellow Blue Flame Open golf tournament regulars last week. Earlier Hardy had informed us that Norm was fighting pancreatic cancer. We emailed to tell “Knobby” that a Bay Area sailor friend of mine had beaten that cancer at UCSF, he replied on Jan. 6th:

“Patrick: How did you hear about this?? First, I don't have pancreatic cancer. I was just checked out at Christmas and they said I have a tumor on my liver. Livers can be split and regenerate. Right now I feel Great and whatever happens, I'll fight it like a TAU. I would appreciate it if you keep this quiet. I don't need a slew of emails.

Thanks,
Knobby

If you Google “Norm Wilson Oxnard” you’ll find “Crowbar” was an active member of the Channel Islands beach-front community of Sliver Strand. http://www.vcstar.com/news/2009/oct/30/silver-strand-beach-utility-lines-project-begins/

Knobby also chaired his 50th High School Reunion:
http://www.framenrail.com/stylus.html

We haven’t seen his obit in the Ventura Star, but check back here for details. His address is in the current SJS Rat “List”.
Norm raced a one-design international Folkboat on San Francisco Bay with fraternity brother Duane Kime. Below: Knobby pretends to be a navigator pointing the way with a compass tied to his head while docked in Tiburon. Just below that is a cropped photo from our #25 issue, March 2002. This was taken at the ’64 Theta Chi All-Greek Show hosted by Paul Rogers and Ren Wicks, Jr. The ATO entry was “Harry Banana & His Bunch” wearing old sport coats spray-painted a fluorescent Lime Green to look good under UV lighting. L to R: Roger Sutter, “Knobby”, Dick Henry.
There is also a photo of Knobby in Mazatlan with other SJS Spartans in ‘63 or ’64 on page 13 of issue #28.

Clar Appledoorn lost his battle with a malignant melanoma in his brain in late August. It was especially hard on his long time teammate and fellow Shasta College coach Leon Donohue. Leon himself had just gotten home after a second round of chemo to battle his leukemia. (Clar, at right, in 2007 with Carl Bauer, Dick Erler and John Colombero.) Appledoorn’s obituary from the Redding Record is on our message board.

http://members7.boardhost.com/RATLINE/

From left, at Clar Appledoorn’s Shasta College wake: San Jose State Teammates Chuck Ennis, John Colombero, Cal Poly Hall of Famer (football/wrestling) Pat Lovell and Leon Donohue. Leon is presently seeking a bone marrow transplant at UCSF.

One of Appledoorn’s last wishers was to make a movie about his life to show at his funeral. His grandson Roy and he filmed two movies about two weeks apart. The first one Clar thought was too long. The second one was made after his chemotherapy. What they showed at his over-flowing wake in September at Shasta College was a collage of the movies with pictures and music he picked out. His son-in-law Dan Button put together the final movie. They said you could feel the pain in Clar’s voice just before it ended.

Appledoorn spent his life (1935-2009) serving others. He was able to work in a job he was passionate about. He was able to love his wife Dorothy for 51 years and raise two children, Rich and Jamie with love and kindness. He lived to see his grandchildren Ryan, Roy, Logan and Olivia grow up and love them unconditionally.

Clar requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Shasta College Foundation. (P.O. Box 496006, Redding, CA 96003.) The money will go directly to fund scholarships. He wanted it to be easier for students to afford college.

Appledoorn, an End on the late Bob Titchenal’s ’58-59-60 Spartans never lost to Arizona State while he was playing. 1958: SJS 21, ASU 20; 1959: SJS 24, ASU 15; 1960: SJS 12, ASU 7. Below is from 1960 Sports Illustrated’s College Preview.. (Our 1960 team finished 5-4, also beating BYU 21-8, Stanford 34-20, Idaho 22-20 and Hawaii 48-6.)

The red-haired, fair-skinned boy from the Dakotas told the Rat Line that he wore shorts up at Shasta College all the years he was coaching. He noticed a mole behind his knee and had it removed. He was X-rayed to see if the melanoma would move up into his lung, but he said X-rays never saw it. Doctors were surprised when they discovered it in his brain. Claire didn’t check with UCSF’s famed Melanoma Clinic until later when he started medication for it.

Pat Lovell, a Tokyo Olympics wrestler and teammate of John Madden, Bobby Beathard, John Panagakis and former Spartan assistant Dick Mannini, emailed on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 7, 2010 that his wife Joy’s sister’s husband* Leon went back to UCSF in late February and found a bone marrow donor in his family—his sister!
(Latest news on our message board)

*It was Leon who told his wife Judy to tell her sister to get out of that Santa Clara Valley hospital if she ever wanted to meet some eligible men. She did and happened to meet a guy Leon had played against in 1958.

Panagakis, a Mustang QB from Washington High in SF with Spartan lineman Carl Mitchell attended last year’s Cal Poly game at Spartan Stadium. (Click on our Photos link.)

Now you know why Lovell, a former coach at Cabrillo College comes to our SJS tailgate parties.

The back story and latest details are on our Rat Line message board, linked from the top of the home page.
http://members7.boardhost.com/RATLINE/

The top photo (below) was taken from the August 7, 1966 49er vs Cowboys football program. They started early that year. The bottom “huck ‘n buck” photo is from the Cowboys.

Leon played with Don Meredith, Pete Gent, Don Perkins, Boby Hays and Dan Reeves. I’m sure he has some stories to tell. That preseason 1966 program published these 1965 NFL stat leaders:

1965 NFL INDIVIDUAL SCORING
Gayle Sayers, Chicago 22 TDs (132 Pts)
Jim Brown, Cleveland 21 TDs (126 Pts)
RUSHING
Jim Brown, Cleveland 1,544 yds, 5.3 avg, 17 TDs
Gayle Sayers, Chicago 867 yds, 5.2 avg, 14 TDs
PASSING
John Brodie, 49ers 242 of 391, 61.9%, 3,112 yds, 30 TDs
Rudy Bukich, Chicago 176 of 289, 56.4% 2,641, 20 TDs
Johnny Unitas, Baltimore 164 of 282, 58.2%, 2,530, 23 TDs
RECEIVING
Dave Parks, 49ers 80, 1344 yds, 16.8 avg, 12 TDs
Tommy McDonald, Rams, 67, 1036 yds, 15.5 avg, 9 TDs

Dave Parks played for Texas Tech. Brodie on The Farm.

Friday’s “Shamble” winners included “early sixties Taus” Dave Traverso, Cliff Draeger and Ray Harris.

2010 Blue Flame Open – January Update
(aka 9th Annual Hard Pipe Classic)

Happy New Year to you and your families from the office of The Commish!! I hope everyone had a grand holiday season and that you’re now preparing for a prosperous New Year. Near as I can tell, all will be well here as soon as I figured out how badly I got screwed with the new Health Care Package!! (Comment on our Health Care string on this site’s message board.)

I hope you are all giving some thought to this year’s BFO, which will be held October 13th – 15th in the Sierra Foothills. The planned agenda below is a work in progress as Rocklin Park Hotel still does not have a full service restaurant, and The Ridge has moved it’s green arification schedule into 10/4, which is only 10 days before our event. I am looking into the Auburn Holiday Inn as a backup for Rocklin Park, and am looking at Lincoln Hills or Turkey Creek for our Friday Shamble shotgun. I hate to move away from The Ridge, but if this ends up being a permanent change for them, we may have to do it.

Not much to report on the news front. I had a good visit/dinner with Dick Neve while he was in town over the holidays to visit with his son. Neve, along with Denny Deichler have recently retired, and are now enjoying their well deserved lives of leisure. Mileski will again be teeing it up in Palm Desert with the big boys at The Hope in February. Not sure if his Arkansas relatives have been invited back after last year’s pool party activities! Pictures from last year’s BFO are on the Rat Line website.

Planned Agenda:

Rocklin Park Hotel (RPH), 916-630-9400, www.rocklinpark.com
Catta Verdera Country Club, 916-645-7200, www.cattaverdera.com
Auburn Valley Golf Club, 530-269-2775, www.auburnvalleygc.com
The Ridge Golf Club, 530-888-7888, www.ridgegc.com

Wednesday, October 13th
- Golf at Cata Vedera CC: 2-Man Team Challenge, first tee time @ 12:00 noon - Format tbd
- Check-in at RPH after 3:00pm
- Libation, Lies and Laughter

Thursday, October 14th
- Breakfast at RPH, 7:30-8:30am
- Golf at Auburn Valley GC: 4-Man Team Competition, first tee time @ 10:00am - Format tbd
- Dinner (location tbd) at 6:30pm
- Draft for Friday’s Team Shamble, Captains: tbd
- Libation, Lies and Laughter

Friday, October 9th
- Check-out at RPH
- Breakfast at RPH, 6:00-7:00am
- Golf at The Ridge: 4-Man Team Shamble, 8:30am Shot Gun Start - Format Team 2BB,
- Prizes, Cocktails and Farewells

2009 Blue Flame Open – Recap
(aka 8th Annual Hard Pipe Classic)

The 8th Annual Blue Flame Open, like all the others before, was a great time for all who attended! We again enjoyed three very special days of links, libation, lies and laughter in the scenic Sierra foothills. With the addition of a few younger classmen, the range of the group now spans Fall ’59 through Fall ’67. That’s the good news! The bad news is that we are all collecting Social Security, and most of us are now Medicare dependents!

Highlights for the event included a truly fantastic group of Rookies; a very special group of non-golfers; tailgate parties that rival anything at SJS; Wednesday’s 2-Man Challenge defending champions successfully defending; Thursday’s 4-Man run-a-way winners; and Friday’s Shamble won by a bunch of “old farts”. Also, the same guy from 2008 won most of the money again.

Lowlights were limited to a large number of MIA’s, and a citation from the fashion police.

Event Highlights:

**	We had our biggest, best group of first timers since our inaugural 2001 group event. It reminded me of the impact the Fall ’63 class had on EX way back when! In addition to Dallas Hall, Mike McHugh, of “Holiday Lunch” fame, recruited an outstanding group which included Tom Aguer, Steve Coates, Butch Dunkle, Jay Fischer, Stan Jorgensen, Les Pelio, and John Ziegler. The best news of all is that they had a good time, and plan to be back next year!

** It is one thing for a bunch of guys to get together to hit and chase a little white ball around. It is quite another to have guys show up just to watch the above mentioned happening. Special thanks to non-golfing Rod Perth, Rob Stensen and Roger Sutter for joining us for this gathering.

** What would be the perfect ending to a long, hard day on the golf course? How about a tailgate party in the parking lot with cooler full of very cold beer & wine?! That is what we had after both Wednesday’s round at Catta Vedera and Thurday’s round at Dark Horse. A very special thanks to Bill Higgins for providing us with the much deserved and enjoyed libation!

** This year’s MVP competition was not even close. You may remember that our Santa Rosa contingency won most of the money last year. This year one of them damn near won it all! Smilin Jim Grace gets his hip replaced in May, and uses his recovery rounds during August and September to fatten his index up to an inflated 13.5. He then proceeds to shoot lights out placing 3rd in the 2-Man, 2nd in the 4-Man, 1st Low-Net Pro Division, and captained 3rd place Shamble team! Needless to say, the handicap committee will be investigating him prior to next year!

** This is the first year that one guy has won two awards! The Rookie-of the-Year award goes to Mike McHugh for rounding up the fantastic group of “first timers” listed above. He also won the “Best Dressed” award by showing up for Friday golf outfitted in a canary yellow shorts & shirt, which was a little loud for this group, but acceptable. He then capped it off with brown mid-calf socks and brown shoes!!! The fashion police at The Ridge required payoff to allow him on the course. His claim was that he forgot socks and that’s all the pro shop had in stock, but insiders reported that this is his standard attire for big events.

Event Competition:

**	Wednesday’s 2-Man Challenge featured nine teams in the field at the scenic Catta Vedera CC.
Based on the score cards turned in, the team of Ascani & Gough’s net 64.0 nudged Ames & Grace net 64.5 to win the trophy, with new comers Coates & Jorgensen’s 65.5 rounding out the top 3. Only Ames’ chunk into the pond at 18 kept them from the perceived winning score. That was all before Clegg & Siegel challenged scorekeeper Grady’s math ability. Grady had reported the defending champions in with respectable net 72.0, however under closer scrutiny, their correct score was a smooth net 62.0!! This wining score placed them back on the victory stand, and again dawning the black gloves in a salute to “Hacker Power”.

**	Thursday’s 4-Man Modified Stableford at the Dark Horse Golf Club was fantastic!! With the exception of one score, all teams were in contention. The team of Ames, Guthrie, Coates, & Kuechle posted a tournament record score of 95 points to win honors! A distant second at 80 was Jorgensen, Grace, Aguer & Kime, third at 77 was Fergus, Ascani, Clegg and Henry. Low net in the Hacker Division (HC >16) was won by Steve Coates with a net 73, over Kime’s net 74. In the Pro Division (HC <15), Smilin’ Jim Grace won honors with a net 71, nudging Stan Jorgensen’s net 73 and The Commish’s net 74.

** The draft for Friday’s featured 2BB Shamble, at the demanding Ridge, was boarder line out-of-control. The captain’s choices were barely audible over the crowd noise. When all the dust settled, all 7 teams looked very respectable. There was one team of “old farts” that everyone thought, “they are no threat, but will have a good time”. Well, not only did they have a good time, but Capt. Draeger along with Traverso (who had to be begged to play), Harris (who was on vicadin & beer) and Fergus (yes, Capt Bly finally broke the curse) won the gold with a 9 under par, 133 score. Finishing with silver, Capt Ascani, Ames, Siegel and Wilkes with a 7 under, 135. Bronze was taken by Capt. Grace, Gough, Coates and Henry with a 6 under, 136. The other four teams were only a few strokes back. It should be noted that this was the highest winning score ever, which doesn’t say much for our group golfing skills!

Pictures taken by Lyke editor Pat O’Daniels are posted on the Rat Line website.

To those of you who chose not to join us, you again missed a great time!! To our missing regulars, Allen, Bloodgood, Lujan, Mace, Mileski, Penman, Pryor, Rudolph’s x 2, and Snell, we missed all of you guys very much, and we look forward to having all of you back with us next year!!! My thanks to all those who made the effort to be a part of this year’s BFO, and for making it such a great time!

Mark October 13th – 15th on your calendars NOW for the 2010 Blue Flame Open!!

We will again be gathering in the Sierra Foothills, and I will again find us three challenging golf courses. I will also put us up in a hotel that also has an onsite “full” restaurant capability.

I look forward to seeing all of you for an even better event next year!! .

Take good care and keep those cards and letters coming my way!!!

Hardy, aka The Commish
shardy50@yahoo.com

Tournament photos are on our “Photos 2” link at top.—O’D

Join SJS ATO group on Yahoo!
Brothers,

We have been growing and adding many alumni over the last year.
