The Rat Line is an independent San Jose State alumni magazine, first published after the 1987 Stanford game by “early sixties friends” of three independent houses on or near South 11th Street—”Greek row”.

They were: The Rats Nest, Lions Den and Surfrider.

You are invited to a

Friday Open House!

Legendary Las Vegas entertainer Fred “Mickey Finn” Soetje is flying out from Florida for the “Take Back of South 11th Street” on Friday, October 15 from 4 to 7 as Alpha Tau Omega fraternity returns to Greek Row—202 So. 11th at San Antonio!

Thanks to a mega donation from Crown Worldwide President Jim Thompson of Hong Kong, ATO has taken possession and has started major repairs prior to rededicating their house the weekend of our Boise State game.

The San Jose State chapter has invited everyone to stop by prior to the 7 to 12 PM Rat Line cocktail party at the Fairmont to tour the house they built in 1962, and listen to “Mickey Finn” duel with fellow ATO Clay Bowers on the ivories.

“Pledge Soetje” will later take over the piano in the Fairmont Hotel lobby.  Bring your banjos!

Retired Business Professor Dr. Jack Holland

kicked in $1,000 to help finance a “Jack Holland Library” in the the new/old Alpha Tau Omega fraternity house at 202 So. 11th across the street from Delta Upsilon and PiKA.  Donations are needed. See Blog. Contact Dennis Chambers

or Mike Herkenrath:

dennis@cps-co.com

MikeH@pavicich.com

Mike told us, “I met with Jack Holland (Aug. 6th) today who made a $1,000 donation towards the 202 rehab fund. His contribution will go towards the “Jack Holland Library” which will be a huge study room on the side hallway by the old House Mother’s room. We will ask for more donations (Need $12,000) to finish this room in Jack’s honor and more rooms to be named by the donors. I brought along Dennis Chambers and we had a nice visit.” Dennis emailed, “I went over and met with Jack for an hour. Very sharp for 88 and in a wheel chair.”

Alabama & Wisconsin Train Trip

Sigma Chi Steve Gossett’s latest update:

To: Spartan Football Odyssey Participants:

The travel schedule shows what I think you have committed to for the Alabama-Wisconsin trip.  Please review the information and let me know whether it is correct or if changes are necessary.

Please send me the full Amtrak fare indicated for each leg of the trip, minus your initial deposit, by July 10th.  I must pay the full amount in mid-July.  Fares do not yet reflect 15% senior discounts, 62+, or 20% group discounts if we qualify.  When the group is finalized you will receive a refund for any applicable discounts.   Tickets, and any credit due, will be distributed when we get to New Orleans on Thursday, September 2nd in a cozy setting over an adult beverage or two.  If by some small chance you are thinking of traveling with oversize luggage, forget it.  Contact me for details or go to the Amtrak web site for more information.

Don’t forget --- the train toTuscaloosa leaves New Orleans at 7:00 AM on Friday, September 3rd, so we need to check out of the hotel by 5:30 AM to arrive at the station by 6:00 AM.

Roomettes (two people) on the City of New Orleans include three meals per person.

I will be forwarding your hotel confirmation numbers in early August.  Currently they are all being held in my name.  Let know if you want two-bed rooms.

Game tickets should have been ordered through the Spartan Ticket Office by June 18th. Call today to see what’s still available.

Alabama - $40.00 eaWisconsin - $42.00

The Party Bus to Madison is being finalized subject to final head count.  A $35.00 deposit is required so please send me that as well.

Also, send me your cell phone numbers.  We are going into unexplored and probably uncivilized territory so they may be our only form of communication.

I am having hip replacement surgery on June 15th so I’ll be out of commission for a few days after that.

If this sounds confusing give me a call.—Steve

Friedrich pays deposit for Tailgate spot in Tuscaloosa

DU fraternity brothers Jerry Shaw and Al Dart, accompanied  Arkansas turf farmer and golf course builder George Friedrich on a plane trip from Searcy, Ark to Tuscaloosa, Alabama last September scouting the Crimson Tide.  The story is on page 2 of the 24-page SJS Rat “List” which was mailed the 2nd week of February. Color photos taken by Shaw are included.

Friedrich has put a deposit down for  a SJS Rat Line tailgate space in the ’Bama Quad this Labor Day. George needs to know how many will be coming to ‘Bama tailgate as his barbecue caterer is very popular and the food might be taken by others.

What's the difference between

a Million, a Billion, a Trillion?

A million seconds is 12 days.

A billion seconds is 31 years.

A trillion seconds is 31,688 years!

ATO Jim Thompson agreed last October to start internships for four groups of four Lucas Graduate School of Business at San Jose State.  Thompson. named a SJS COB distinguished alum in 2009, shares his world-wide locations on the back cover of our 2010 SJS Rat “List”.

Donohue’s much better!

Retired NFL Alum, Spartan Hall of Fame Tackle/End and Shasta College coach Leon Donohue underwent a successful bone marrow transplant from his sister on March 25th.  On July 7th he had 99% of his sister’s blood and his cancer was in remission. Leon is recovering in San Francisco and visiting UCSF’s Parnasus campus twice a week. Chuck Ennis says Leon is planning to attend our Tailgate at the  Boise State game on October 16th.
